Stickmen Open Season
Over Buckeyes, 12-8

By Steven Giannini

Facing what Coach Buddy
Beardmore termed a surprisingly
strong Ohio State team, the University's
stickmen recorded their
first regular game win of the season,
12-8.

Frank Quayle was the first to
score in the game with 3:85 gone
in the first quarter. Ohio State
came back quickly with Jay Murray
and Rick Whiteman making
a goal apiece to put th Buckeyes
ahead 2-1. Charley Rullman
tied the score for the Cavaliers
as the first quarter ended 2-2.

The Buckeyes continued to play
well in the second quarter with
attackman Brian Driscoll making
two tallies. Finally the scoring attack
of the Cavaliers began to roll
with Charley Rullman assisted by
Jim Potter, Chuck Edwards
assisted by Rullman, Sandy Archibald,
and Frank Quayle putting
the stickmen ahead to stay ahead
as the second quarter ended 6-4.

Opening up the second half Rullman
got the Cavaliers on the score
board right away. Cliff Murray
then scored for Ohio State. After
Jim Potter had made the score
8-5 Virginia, tallied followed by
Ohio's Murray and the Cavaliers'
Rullman. Brian Driscoll then put
the Buckeyes as close as they
were to come in the game with
two goals making the score 9-8
early in the fourth quarter. Rick
Morrow, Jim Potter, and Charley
Rullman then ended the game's
scoring as each collected a goal
and the Cavaliers triumphed 12-8.

Ohio's stickmen proved to be
tough competitors who often stole
the ball in the first half and controlled
it the majority of the time
in the second and third quarters.
Coach Beardmore believes his
team's condition was a factor here
as they wore down the Buckeyes
and took control of the game in
the fourth quarter. The Cavaliers'
size may also have been important
as they obviously outweighed the
Ohio State stickmen.

Coach Beardmore would like his
team to take about 80 attempts
during a normal game, yesterday
afternoon his team was limited to
only 35.

But the Cavaliers' reputation in
the face off was lived up to as
they won all but two. The only
comment Coach Beardmore had to
offer after his team's initial contest
was that it was obvious they
needed more work. There is just
three practice days for more work
before the stickmen's next game at
Carr's Hill Field this Friday at
2:30 against Dartmouth.

After staying here a few days
to practice, the Ohio State team
will continue their spring break
tour to face Randolph-Macon,
Washington & Lee, and North
Carolina.
