Cavaliers Rate Holiday Tube Appearance

Upcoming Contests

By Tom Sansonetti

Virginia's hoopmen face a rugged
slate of opponents in its next
six contests, beginning with an
away game against South Carolina
this Saturday and ending the
day classes resume, battling North
Carolina. Clemson, N. C. State,
Duke, and Navy are sandwiched
in between.

Returning an earlier visit to
Charlottesville by South Carolina,
the Cavaliers are hoping to sweep
this season's series with the Gamecocks.
Virginia won the first game
84-82. South Carolina will depend
on the ACC's fourth leading point
producer Gary Gregor who scores
at a 20.2 clip. He also ranks as
the conference's second best board
man with 14.3 rebounds a game.

Clemson provides the Cavaliers
the chance to show off their form
via this regionally-televised contest
January 20 at 2 p.m. Tube hawks,
if current records are any indication,
can expect a battle to avoid
the ACC's cellar.

While Virginia students are enjoying
their semester break in Vermont,
Florida, or good old Crozet,
the Cavaliers have the opportunity
to improve their record with three
straight home games.

N. C. State arrives at the University,
January 29, for their first
meeting with the Cavaliers. Unknown
to most fans, the Wolfpack
currently resides atop the
ACC standings. Since their top
scorer Eddie Biedenbach is only
averaging 13.6, State has made
well-balanced attack this
far in the season.

Duke, who crushed Virginia 10561
in December, visits University
Hall to open a busy February for
the Cavaliers. In an intersectional
contest Navy ends Virginia's home-stand
February 3. The all-time
series record offers no encouragement,
as the Midshipmen have
won 32 of 37 over the years.

The North Carolina game at
Chapel Hill sends the Cavaliers into
the den of the nation's third-ranked
team.
