ACC Roundup

Donnan Rated Most Proficient

Jim Donnan, North Carolina
State's quarterback, may be the
most proficient player in the
Atlantic Coast Conference. Donnan
ranks no better than fifth in
total offense and has been responsible
for only two touchdowns,
but look at it in a different light.

Donnan, in gaining 377 yards,
has yet to have a pass intercepted.
In 40 attempts, he has hit on
25 for 63 percent, high in the
ACC. Each of the 49 times Donnan
has handled the ball, it has
been worth 7.7 yards to N. C.
State.

Virginia's Frank Quayle, a
multi-purpose halfback, might
rank just below Donnan in proficiency.
Quayle has handled the
ball 38 times and has gained 349
yards by rushing, receiving, and
returning punts and kicks. This
figures out to 9.1 yards per try.

Warren Muir, the ACC's leading
rusher, has accumulated 345 total
yards and has handled the ball
72 times. The South Carolina fullback
does not run back kickoffs
and punts, so his average is
naturally below that of the QB
or all-purpose back. Still, he is
averaging 4.8 yards each time he
packs the ball.

Perhaps the best average among
ACC players belongs to N.C.
State's tight end, Harry Martell.
Martell has caught nine passes
for 177 yards and two touchdowns.
This figures out to 19.6 yards
per touch and just as vital, 22
percent of the times that he catches
the football, he scores a touchdown.

But the best average of all may
belong to State's Gerald Warren,
a place kicker. Warren has made
six for six extra points and five
of seven field goal tries. Figure it
takes 10 seconds for his normal
appearance on the field and he
has scored 21 points in 130 seconds.
That's about ten points a minute.
