Bill Walton Leads UPI A-A;
Ratleff, Lamar Repeat
By STEVE GASKE
Barry Parkhill was named
to an honorable mention spot
on the UPI All-American team
which was announced
yesterday. One of the best pro
prospects among the collegiate
guards, Parkhill was one
of five ACC players
mentioned in the voting.
For the second year in a
row, Bill Walton lead the
voting among the nation's
coaches. With a 19.8 scoring
average and an average of 17
rebounds a game, Walton lead
the UCLA Bruins to another
undefeated season and the
nation's number one ranking.
Keith Wilkes was named to
the second team for the Bruins
while Larry Farmer and Larry
Hollifield were honorable
mention.
Other first team picks were
Ed Ratleff from Long Beach
State, David Thompson of N.C.
State, Doug Collins of Illinois
State, and Southwest
Louisiana's Dwight Lamar.
This was the second year in
a row that Ratleff and Lamar,
high school teammates in Ohio,
have been named to the first
team.
Ratleff is considered by all
observers to be the best pro
prospect in the country. During
his three year career he has
kept Long Beach State among
the top teams in the nation,
playing at both guard and
forward.
Lamar has done pretty
much the same thing for
Southwest Louisiana. The
Ragin Cajuns are ranked
Seventh in the nation with
Lamar, the leading scorer in
the nation last year, averaging
29.3 points per contest.
Collins, a 6'6" guard, is
another big scorer who should
go very early in the pro draft.
Thompson was the only
Sophomore named to the first
team but, without a doubt the
ACC's player of the year
belonged there. With a 25.6
average for the number two
team in the country and the
best natural physical talent on
the All-American team
Thompson proved virtually
unstoppable this year.
Other ACC players
mentioned were Tom
McMillen, second team; Tom
Burleson, third team; and
George Karl.
Wilkes, McMillen,
Minnesota's Jim Brewer, South
Carolina's Kevin Joyce, and
Ernie Digregoria of Providence
made up the second team.
