Streak-Shooting JVs Top W&L Frosh
By STEVE GASKE
As a preliminary to the
Varsity game Saturday night,
the University Jayvee
baskteball team downed the
Little Generals of Washington
and Lee 72-61 in its first game
ever.
Coached by Steve Napp and
Tim Rash, the Jayvees started
slowly in the game with a series
of turnovers. It wasn't until
almost three minutes had
elapsed that the Cavs broke the
ice on a tip-in by Ned Tiley.
Throughout the game
Virginia dominated the boards
and was able to score in the
middle with its height
advantage. W&L on the other
hand, was limited to
breakaway layups by guard
Paul Maloney for most of the
first half.
With the score close in the
early going, Pat "Little P"
Culhane broke the game open
late in the first half hitting on
five quick points to give the
Cavs a seven point margin at
halftime.
In the second half Virginia's
turnovers started to show as
the Cavs came out of the
locker room to build a 13 point
lead behind the shooting of
Charles Bowers and Dick Davis
only to lose it on turnovers.
Although the Cavs
outrebounded the Little
Generals 57-36, they managed
to keep the contest close with
a 33-16 advantage in the
turnover category.
With the score 49-48
midway through the period,
Dick Davis, the game's leading
scorer with 22 points, took
charge and scored eight of the
Cavs next ten points. After
driving the baseline for a
two-pointer, Davis came back
with a 15 foot shot from the
left wing and another twisting
baseline layup.
A series of layups put W&L
back in the game, however, as
the Little Generals continued
to capitalize on Cav mistakes
to score on easy breakaways.
Virginia's final margin of
victory came on a procession
to the foul line that produced
the final seven Cav points.
The Jayvees' next game is
against VMI at 5:55
Wednesday before the Varsity
game.
