Matmen Tangle With Rutgers, Bucknell

By FLETCHER THOMPSON

While the basketball team
hogs the limelight this
weekend, the Cavalier wrestling
team will come to grips with its
schedule this Saturday in a
triangular meet held in the
wrestling-crazy area of
northeast Pennsylvania.

Providing opposition for the
matmen will be host Bucknell
and Rutgers, two teams which
figure to give them a flying
start on the season. Bucknell,
though, did manage an 8-6
record last year.

As in years past, Coach
George Edwards' squad will
again start the season off with
a flexible and probably
inexperienced line-up. Of the
ten spots, at least five will be
filled by first or second-year
men.

Most notable of the
returnees from last year's 6-2
production is 177-pounder
Kevin Michaels, erstwhile
Wahoo linebacker.

Two-Time Champ

A two-time conference
champion and the ACC's
Outstanding Wrestler in 1972
(much to the displeasure of
Maryland coach Sully Krause)
Michaels is expected to go
down to 167 by the end of the
season. Wherever he wrestles,
he should cause a few more
headaches for opposing
coaches.

Wendell Counted-On

126-pounder Dave Wendell
will also be counted on to win
more than his share of bouts.
Moving up from 118, where he
finished second in the ACC as a
first-year man. Wendell has
already added a Shippensburg
Open championship to his
accomplishments.

Veterans Denis Bittenbender
at 150 and Tom Derrickson at
158 are also expected to carry
a considerable load.

After the Pennsylvania
jaunt, the matmen will return
to U Hall for the State
championship meet on Dec. 9,
followed by a dual match up
with William & Mary on the
16th.
