Ruggers Romp After Losing

By G.D. ROTHENBERG

In their final home contest
of the fall season, the
University rugby team's "A"
side romped over VPI 33-13
Sunday in front of onlookers.

The "A" side halfheartedly
whipped the Hokies despite
playing without the services of
a handful of regulars. Jim
Farley, Courtney Hoopes, John
Trender, Mark Krebs and Peter
Schmidt combined tries,
conversions, kicks and penalty
shots to account for the 33
points. Player-coach Jay
Waldron summed up the
atmosphere with "If we'd had
played them yesterday, it'd
have been 50-0."

The "yesterday" referred to
by Waldron was the
Sud-Americano game Saturday.
The ruggers went down to only
their second loss this season by
a margin of 16-6 despite a 6-4
halftime lead.

Waldron opines that
"Virginia was dominating first
half play. Then we gave them a
free penalty kick and then
another 55-yard penalty and
finally a last-minute try sealed
it up for them."

Waldron added that
Sud-Americano, a team
composed of primarily
Welshmen and New Zealanders,
"was the best side I've ever
played against. We were
beating them in the scrum as a
scrum half".

Compensating somewhat
for the "A" side loss were
victories by the "B" side by
4-0 over Sud-Americano and
the "C" side's 8-7 squeaker
over Sud's third side. The
Virginia fourth side dropped a
14-12 decision against the
University of Richmond "A"
side to fill out the day's action.

The ruggers travel to College
Park to do battle with the
Maryland rugby team Sunday
in their fall finale. The ruggers
will return to play their first
spring game in March.
