Cavs' Last-Second Goal Ties State, 1-1
Zimmerman, Gaughen Combine On Score

By STEVE GASKE

Utilizing a last-second
power play, the University
soccer team managed to salvage
a 1-1 tie out of what looked
like a sure defeat at the hands
of N. C. State in a game played
at the new soccer field
Saturday afternoon.

Behind, 1-0, through most
of the second half, the Cavs
were over anxious and tended
to rush the game. As a
result they had trouble
mounting a successful attack
on the Wolfpack net.

With only a few seconds
remaining in the game, Virginia
brought everyone except goalie
Scott Peyton up for a corner
kick in a final effort to even
the score.

On the corner kick, the
State goalie went up in the
middle of a crowd and got his
hands on the ball. In a play
that he later admitted was
"dubious," Phil Russell ran
into the the goalie, jarring the
ball loose and knocking the
Wolfpack goaltender to the
ground.

With the goalie out of the
play, a series of shots ensued in
the congested action in front
of the goal. Second-year
fullback Tim Zimmerman hit
the crossbar on a shot, causing
the ball to fall at the feet of
John Gaughen.

Gaughen then proceeded to
tap the ball in for what was
literally a last-second goal. The
official time for the goal was
44:59.

Earlier in the game, N. C.
State scored on a play similar
to the Virginia goal. On a hard
shot, the ball hit the crossbar
and bounced straight down.
After some shots in the crowd,
the ball went past Peyton for
the lone 'Pack goal.

By tying N. C. State,
Virginia finishes its ACC season
in fifth place, one game shead
of the 'Pack. Undefeated
Clemson has already clinched
the conference championship
with Duke second.

This afternoon the Cavaliers
will travel to Randolph-Macon
for a 2 pm playoff to
determine the division
champion in the state. The
winner of the game will host
Madison for the State
Championship. Earlier in the
year, Virginia and Randy Mac
played to a 2-2 tie leaving them
deadlocked with identical 5-0-1
marks in state play.
