Duke, State Gain ACC Wins

By BILL BERNO

North Carolina and
Maryland made successful
sorties out of the conference
and favorites Duke and N.C.
State won loop contests to
highlight this week's ACC
action.

Kentucky's Wildcats came
to Chapel Hill hoping to topple
once-beaten UNC, but the Tar
Heels had different ideas. They
rolled over Kentucky's defense
for 354 yards on the ground,
including 126 yards by
dangerous tailback Ike
Oglesby, who started his first
game of the year. After the
Wildcats scored the opening
touchdown, UNC piled up 24
points to put the game away.

Maryland beat up Villanova
in its homecoming victory, but
paid a high price when
quarterback Al Neville, the
ACC's leading passer, was
pounded to the ground and
suffered a broken collarbone
which will sideline him for the
season. The score of 37-7 was
perfectly indicative of the
mismatch. The Terps had no
trouble at all.

Duke's offense again
sputtered, but one touchdown
was all it took to beat
punchless Clemson, 7-0. Duke
has only scored seven points in
two games since running up 37
on the Wahoos.

N.C. State is beginning to
show that it will be very tough
opposition for the Wahoos on
Openings Weekend. The
Wolfpack trampled on ACC
opponent for the second
straight week, blitzing woeful
Wake Forest, 42-13. Stan
Fritts, a newcomer to State's
collection of fine runners,
scored five touchdowns. Bruce
Shaw got in his licks by lofting
a 56-yard scoring toss to Steve
Lester.
