Pack Surprises Blue Devils;
Terrapins, Georgia Tech Roll
This past weekend's ACC
action produced one surprise
and two ho-hum results as
underdog North Carolina State
shocked Duke, 17-0, while
Maryland crushed Wake Forest,
23-0, and Georgia Tech
pounded Clemson, 31-9.
Duke's offense, which ran
over the Cavaliers last week in
Durham, again moved well,
rolling up over 300 yards. The
Devils were unable to pierce
the State goal line, though, as
the Wolfback became notably
tenacious in its own territory.
The Pack, powered by the
passing of Bruce Shaw and the
running of Stan Fritts had no
such trouble. In the second
quarter State punctured the
Devil defense with a 69-yard
scoring march climaxed by a
10-yard Fritts jaunt and added
another score before the half
with Fritts again going over
following an interception.
Duke's futility continued in
the second half while State
posted a third-quarter field
goal than sat on its lead.
State is now 2-2-1 overall
and 1-1 in the conference,
while Duke's marks stand at
1-4 and 1-1.
In the weekend's only other
intra-conference game, hapless
Wake Forest journeyed to
Maryland with three losses to
its credit and came back with
four.
The Demon Deacons
seemed pretty mild to the
Terrapins, no powerhouse
themselves, managing only 128
yards in total offense while
surrendering 357.
Maryland cracked the
scoring column in the second
quarter on a 25-yard sprint by
quarterback Al Neville who
finished the day with 115
yards on the ground. The
halftime margin stood at 6-0
with the failure of the
conversion attempt.
After a third-period field
goal, the Terps finally took the
outcome out of the realm of
doubt, with two touchdowns.
Surging Georgia Tech
continued to come on strong
with a 31-9 trouncing of
Clemson in Atlanta. After the
Tigers had taken a 3-0 lead on
an Eddie Seigler field goal, the
Yellow Jackets ran them out of
town with scoring passes from
QB Eddie McAshan to flanker
Jim Robinson coupled with a
McAshan run and a return of
pass interception.
