Wolfpack Overpowering In Swimming

By BILL BERNO

N.C. State, possibly the
best swimming team the ACC
has ever seen, won every event
to crush the field in the
conference swim meet held in
the U-Hall natatorium this past
weekend.

From the beginning, State
grabbed the lead and built it
into a winning margin of over
260 points. The Wolfpack
finished with an incredible 658
points, followed by North
Carolina with 395 points, and
surprising Maryland with 373.

Wake Forest used a
fifth-place finish in the final
event, the 400-yard freestyle
relay, to edge the Cavaliers for
fourth place, 150-148. Duke
was sixth with 105 points, and
Clemson had 44 points.

Cav Coach Ron Good said,
"State is just out of this world.
The rest of the conference put
together probably couldn't
beat them." He held the same
opinion as the rest of the
league coaches.

Thursday night in the first
event, the 500-yard freestyle,
State placed three men in the
finals. Freshman Ralph Baric
won the event in a conference
record 4:39.5. Teammate
Rusty Lurwick was third
behind Carolina's James
Southard.

Baric Outstanding Performer

Baric was easily the
outstanding performer of the
meet, winning three events and
swimming on a victorious
relay. He qualified for the
NCAA meet in three events.

As well as he swam, Baric's
feats were rivaled by many of
his teammates. In the 200
individual medley, 'Pack
swimmers finished 1-2-3. Tony
Corliss outtouched Richard
Hermes in an ACC record time
of 1:57.2.

Sprint star Chuck Raburn, a
freshman, won the 50 free in
21.2 and former champion
Mark Elliott was second. The
ultimate State dominance
occurred in diving, when the
'Pack's four divers swept the
event. To top off the near
perfect day, State's medley
relay won easily, with the
Cavalier quartet of Gerry
Rollins, Jeff McKeever, Al
Ettenger and Frans DeJong
fourth.

Friday Good To State

Friday evening State
continued to coast with a 1-2
finish in the 400 individual
medley. Baric won the event
with a fantastic time of 4:09.9.
Hermes finished second. Mark
Creighton finished 11th for the
Cavs.

Corliss won his second
event when he captured the
200 free in 1:44.1. Scott
Balderston of Virginia placed
10th. Balderston also finished
10th in the 50 free.

State's Jim Schliestett
easily copped the 100 butterfly
in 51.7. Jeff Hoffacker took
the 100 backstroke in an ACC
record 53.8. Chris Mapes
outtouched Maryland's Tom
Schaeberle in the 100
breaststroke. Ettenger was
eighth.

State's 800-yard freestyle
relay of Lurwick, Baric, Corliss
and Elliott coasted to an easy
win in 7:00.8. Once again,
Virginia was fourth.

On the final day of
competition, Baric won his
third event, the 1650- yard
freestyle with a conference
record 16:17.9. On his way to
victory, Baric set a new
1000-yard record, clocking
9:49.8.

Bernardino In Nationals

Mark Bernardino finished
third, and his time of 16:38.2
qualified him for the NCAA
meet in Knoxville, Tenn.,
March 22, 23 and 24. It is the
second trip to the Nationals in
three years for Bernardino.

Raburn won the 100 free in
47.7, leading a 1-2-3-4 State
sweep. Richard Carter won the
200 backstroke in 1:58.6.
Rollins was seventh. Hermes
finished his excellent meet by
winning the 200 breaststroke in
2:15.1. Bedell was tenth.

State's divers repeated their
one-meter diving sweep in the
three-meter event, taking the
top four places. State's
freestyle relay completed the
Wolfpack's outstanding
performance by coming from
behind to nip Maryland in
3:11.2.
