N.C. State Rockets Up To Fourth

Florida State was the victim
of last week's biggest surprise
when the Seminoles
succumbed to unpredictable
Princeton in the opening round
of the Marshall Invitational.
That loss cost Florida State
seven places in the latest UPI
poll as they fell to ninth.
Following UCLA in the top
ten were Marquette, Maryland,
and N.C. State, which jumped
from sixth to fourth after
capturing the Big Four Classic
with a 68-61 win over North
Carolina.
Minnesota and Long Beach
were not affected considerably
in the weekly shake-up, but
Missouri, a newly discovered
basketball power, continued its
advances as the Tigers rose to
seventh this week.
The remaining spots in the
top ten were filled by SW
Louisiana and Indiana.
In the second ten, Joe
Williams, the coach who made
Jacksonville a household name,
saw his unbeaten Purple
Palladins from Furman appear
for the first time this year. The
Palladins are seventeenth with
a 4-0 record.
Penn, Vanderbilt,
Providence, UNC, and Kansas
State were ranked eleventh
through fifteenth respectively.
Vanderbilt upped their record
to 7-0 by winning their own
tournament last week. The
Commodores, the surprise
team in the South Eastern
Conference, have the best
record in the nation along with
Missouri.
New Mexico, Houston, San
Francisco, and Marshall,
conquerors of Princeton,
completed the latest national
ratings.
