Cavs' Wally Walker Hits Jumper Over W&M's Matt Courage

William and Mary returned
to the scene of the crime
Saturday night and proved it
had not lost its touch,
smothering the Cavalier
grapplers, 20-15.

The Indians who had taken
five of seven finals meetings
against the Wahoos in last
week's State Tournament,
dropped off slightly but still
had enough to come away
unscathed in a battle of
unbeatens. This time out, the
inspired Cavs managed four
wins and a tie while dropping
several tight bouts.

"It was a tough one to lose,"
remarked Coach George
Edwards, who spent much of
the match squirming in his
matside seat. "I knew it would
be close."

Cav state champs Dave
Wendell and Tom Derrickson
did nothing to dishonor their
titles, defeating their Indian
challengers by larger margins
than in the state finals.

Wendell, wrestling at 126,
showed Ron Zediker the lights
early in the match and again at
the end, both times with
pancakes, but was unable to
flatten him completely and
settled for a superior decision,
16-3.

W&M decided to give
somebody else a chance to stop
158-pounder Derrickson and
replaced state finalist George
Stark with Bob Friedhoff. The
switch was to no avail,
however, as Derrickson added a
7-1 decision to a 6-1 finals win.

Jeff Curzi, at 190, avenged
his loss to Mike Furniss with a
surprisingly easy 7-1 victory,
while heavyweight Ken Mahon
was the only other Cav winner,
getting by another converted
190-pounder, Tom Berklow,
6-4.

In the match everyone was
waiting for, 177-pounders
Kevin Michaels and Scott
Moyer wrestled to 4-4 draw,
which shouldn't shock
anybody. The pair went for 11
minutes in the state meet and
failed to come up with a bona
fide verdict.

Behind 3-2 in the last
minute, Michaels picked up his
first dual meet takedown of
the year to take a 4-3 lead with
25 seconds left. Moyer
couldn't be denied an escape,
though, and another tie was
add to Michaels' record.
