Booters Still Unbeaten In State Play

By STEVE GASKE

In action over the weekend,
the University soccer team
took another step towards
winning the Eastern division of
the state as it downed
Hampton–Sydney, 3-0, before a
sparse early morning crowd at
the new soccer field.

Coach Jim Stephens likened
Virginia's first half defense to a
sieve as he called the play in
the first half "terrible."

Part of the fault for the
defense being porous in the first
half may have been due to the
fact Coach Stephens moved
some of his fullbacks up to
forward in order to generate
some offense in the Cavalier
attack.

This strategy proved to be
ideal in the second half,
however, as the Cavs had the
ball on offense so much that
the defense might as well have
gone out to get some breakfast.

With a margin of 34-9 in
the shots-on-goal category the
Cavs displayed by far their
strongest offense of the season.
Hampton-Sydney's goalie was
credited with 25 saves for the
contest.

Mr. Stephens remarked,
however, that "we took a lot
of shots. The score should have
been 10-0."

About seven minutes into
the second half Sam Crosby
shot a pass through the middle
to Jay Meaney who booted the
ball into the net to make the
score 1-0.

A few minutes later, Ted
Knetzger took a cross from the
left side in front of the goal
and pushed the ball in with his
body for an insurance goal.

With most of the starters
out, the final Cav goal came
when Bruce Davis connected
on an open shot from about 10
yards out that went into the
lower left hand corner of the
goal.

In other action this
weekend Clemson clinched the
ACC soccer title by downing
Duke 1-0 in double overtime.
Maryland lost to North
Carolina, 2-1, making the end
of the season showdown
between the two powers
meaningless.
