"A" Side Rugby Had One Of Its Biggest Wins This Past Weekend Over The Baltimore Rugby Club

In what may ultimately be
regarded as the watershed game
of the year, the University
Rugby "A" side outlasted the
Baltimore Rugby Club, 21-10,
at Baltimore Sunday.

Baltimore lucked out a 10-3
halftime lead on two freakish
scores. The ruggers roared back
in the second half and
continually proved that they
were the better team on the
field.

Coach Jay Waldrom viewed
the win as a consequence of
the superior conditioning of
the ruggers. "Fitness was the
difference in the last 30
minutes. We kept driving and
were pulling away at the end.
They had a bunch of
230-pound scrummers who
tired at the close of the game."

First Loss

Baltimore had been
undefeated in its first six
contests this year before lining
up against the ruggers. They
brought with them impressive
credentials including a shut-out
win against the Manhattan
Rugby Club last week.

Demolishes Invincibility

Demolishing Baltimore's
facade of invincibility were
scorers Buzzy Witt, Mike
Frakes, Courtney Hoopes and
Peter Schmidt. Schmidt's four
kicks accounted for nine points
alone. Dave Hudson and John
Owen were also singled out by
Waldron for exceptional scrum
play.

The "B" side proved that last
weeks 51-0 trouncing of W&L
was no fluke with a 42-6 win
over Baltimore's second side.
In addition, the "D" side came
through with a 16-4 thrashing
of Baltimore's "C" side, which
enabled the ruggers to sweep
the series. Elsewhere, the
James River's best side
white-washed the rugger "C"
side 13-0.

Rugby fans can watch the
rugby team this weekend at
Nameless Field as the "A"
siders host Richmond, Sunday
at 2 p.m. Waldron will be back
in the line-up after recovering
from a broken leg. The high
scoring "B" side will take off
Saturday against W&M at 11
a.m.
