Hockey Club Wins, 3-1
By JANE CLOSE
Roanoke managed a last
minute goal to defeat the
University's Women's Field
Hockey Team 2-1 in the
season's first contest played at
Roanoke. Center, Pat Jones
drove in the lone goal for
Virginia.
In the second game, the JV
could not be stopped and came
away clean with a 2-1 decision.
Both goals were scored by
fourth year nursing student,
Stephanie Smiley.
Virginia came back to win
the Oct. 14 home opener
against the Richmond Club by
a score of 3-1. Juanita Buster
broke free from the left wing
position to score one goal and
Karen Quashnock scored a
double rally for an impressive
offensive showing. The JV was
idle for this bout.
"Everything looks just
great," commented former
club president, Beverly
Marcum. "Our defense is
almost impassable. If anything,
getting together on the forward
line to score is our only
setback," she said. "But," she
was quick to add, "that's
coming along fine."
Offensive positions for the
first team are: left wing,
Juanita Buster, left inner, Joan
Chopka, center, Pat Jones,
right inner, Karen Quashnock,
and right wing, co-capt.
Richmond Warren.
On defense are left
halfback, Sue Greene, center
halfback, Sandy Hinds, right
halfback, Chesley Garrett, and
fullbacks, co-capt. Claudia
Reasor and Jill Vines. Guarding
the net is Sandra Sims. Janie
Gray, the regular center
halfback, is out for the season
with a broken collarbone, as
the result of a bike accident.
