Davis Is No. 2 Passer In ACC

By WHIT HOLCOMB

Maryland quarterback Al
Neville picked right up where
he left off last year and leads
both the total offense and
passing categories in the
weekly ACC football statistics.

Neville, as a sophomore last
year, finished as the league's
top passer with 1275 yards.
He has thrown for 395 yards
and run for an additional 33
yards already this year.

Virginia's Harrison Davis is
the number two man behind
Neville. Although Davis has
completed only 27 of 81
attempts for 361 yards, he
does have four touchdowns to
his credit. Freshman Dave
Buckey, who led N.C. State to
a crushing 30-3 win over
Syracuse last week, is the
number six passer with 230
yards.

Virginia's Dave Sullivan
continues to lead the pass
receivers with 14 receptions for
128 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Maryland receivers Don Ratliff
and Frank Russell rank second
and third, with ten catches
apiece.

Kent Merritt, Virginia's
speedy running back, ranks
third in rushing with 34 rushes
for 130 yards and one
touchdown. Smiley Sanders of
Clemson leads with only 16
rushes for 118 yards and a 7.4
yard average. North Carolina's
Billy Hite ranks second with 40
carries for 137 yards.

ACC Defensive Player of the
Week Dan Blakley leads in
interceptions with two thefts,
while Billy Maxwell is third in
kick scoring with 12 points.

Although Virginia's offense
ranks fifth in total offense and
last in rushing offense, the
Cavaliers' defensive unit is
second in rushing defense and
fourth in total defense. The
stingy Wahoo defense has
allowed only 187 yards on the
ground in two games, and an
average of only 2.0 yards a
rush.

Clemson leads both
defensive categories, allowing
201.0 yards in only one game
and 91 yards on the ground.

North Carolina heads the
total offense and scoring
offense departments, averaging
459.0 yards and 33.5 points a
game. Virginia ranks third in
passing offense behind N.C.
State and Maryland.
