Golfers Are Fifth In Meet

By FLETCHER THOMPSON

In a development that even
that most cautious observer
would have to term "no
surprise," Wake Forest and its
star performer Jim Simons
walked away with the ACC
golf championship held at
Willow Creek Golf Club in
High Point, N.C. on Monday,
Tuesday and Wednesday of this
week.

Simons, who gained
national prominence this past
summer for his strong showing
in the U.S. Open, came in with
a 75 Wednesday and finished
the 54-hole tournament with
an even par total of 216 to
outdistance his nearest
competitor, teammate Eddie
Pearce, by six strokes.

Simons closing round was
highlighted by a hole-in-one on
the 179-yard sixteenth. He
could manage only one birdie,
though, and this was negated
by six bogeys to put him three
over par for the round.

The five Wake golfers
combined for a team score of
1,122, 39 strokes ahead of
second place Maryland, a finish
that is now becoming
traditional for both teams.

The Virginia entry did not
fare nearly as well, finishing
fifth in the seven team field,
up two from last year's
seventh.

Coach Jim Stephens
commented that his boys did
"real well" Mr. Stephens also
pointed out that they could
have easily finished second or
third. As it turned out, though,
the Cavaliers recorded a score
of 1181, only one swing of the
club behind fourth place UNC
and 20 behind Maryland.

Top man for the linksmen
was Mike Mozur, who carded
rounds of 79, 76, and 78 for
233 to gain twelfth place.
Right behind him was
teammate Brit Stenson, at 234.
Other Cavalier finishers were
Brad Reynolds at 236, Bill
Hickson at 239 and King
Oehmig, who was among the
leaders on the opening day
with 75, but soared to an 85
on the final round for a 239
total.
