Roundup
While hundreds reveled in
the Mad Bowl beer bust last
Saturday afternoon, the varsity
tennis team forsook beer,
revelry, and all other earthly
pleasures to thrash visiting
Swarthmore, 9-0, in frigid cold
of the Perry Memorial Courts.
Singles winners were Doug
Waterman, Jim Ratliff, Frank
Hatten, Hoyt Murray, Don
Napier and Rick Swift while
the teams of Frank
Spratlin-Ratliff, Hatten-Murray,
and Swift-Napier
swept the doubles.
The Virginia baseball team
dropped its opening game to
host East Carolina, Saturday,
13-11, in the wind and snow of
Greenville, N. C.
The inclement weather
created serious problems for a
bevy of wild hurlers who
were unable to control the wet
ball and allowed opposing
batters to score almost at will.
The score was 8-6 after the
fifth inning with two ECU
homers accounting for four
runs. The Cavs rallied with five
in the seventh but the Pirates
countered with three in the
home half to notch their sixth
straight victory. Yesterday's
game was snowed out.
The varsity golf team
finished a disappointing eighth
in the Red Fox Intercollegiate
Golf Tournament held in
Tryon, N. C. last weekend.
The University of Tennessee
ran away with the ten-team
event, outdistancing second
place Ohio U. by 59 strokes.
The Cavs' top finisher was Brad
Reynolds who carded a 236 for
54 holes. Only five strokes off
the winning pace of
Tennessee's Mike Mills.
