Tarheels Lead ACC Scoring
Clemson Tops Defensive Stats

North Carolina continues to
reign as the statistical leader of
the ACC, according to figures
released yesterday.

In terms of overall scoring,
the Tar Heels maintain their
hold on first place with 91.1
points per game, followed by
the Cavaliers, throwing in 87.6
points per game. Maryland and
Duke round out the top
scoring teams, with 81.3 and
77.8 points per game,
respectively.

The best defensive team in
the conference is Clemson,
grudgingly giving up 67.2
points a session, while Duke is
equally stingy, yielding a
paltry 67.8 points a game.
Maryland and Virginia are in a
real dogfight for the third
position, the Terps allowing
68.6 points, and the Wahoos
giving up 68.7. Only 1.5 points
separate the top four defensive
teams.

The Tar Heels are the top
conference sharpshooters,
leading in both field-goal, and
free-throw percentage. Hitting
on 53.8 per cent of their shots
from the field, and 74.7 per
cent of their free throws, they
rank nationally in their
accuracy from the floor.
Following North Carolina in
field-goal percentage are
Maryland, with 51.5 per cent,
N.C. State, with 48.5, Duke,
with 47.6, and Virginia,
sporting a not-so-amazin 47.0

Close behind the Tarheels in
free throw percentage is Duke,
hitting on 74.2 per cent of
their free throws. Maryland,
Clemson, and Virginia, with a
69.4% free throw average,
round out the top five in that
category.

North Carolina State, with
7-4 center Tommy Burleson,
leads in total rebounds per
game, with 47.4 The Wolfpack
is followed in this department
by UNC, with 45.3 rebounds
per game, and Virginia, with
44.5 rebounds.
