"Ah'm puzzled as to the
secrut of mah success" was the
only comment a breathless
John Markon would make to
newsmen when the Gastonia,
N.C. Wizard was informed
yesterday that he had clinched
the coveted Pigskin
Prognostications title.

Markon, with a six-game
lead over challengers Hugh
Carter and Ernest Dempsey,
was assured the crown when
the other four experts left with
a mathematical chance of
catching him opted instead to
fight it our for second place.

In the Orange Bowl battle
for the nation's Number One
spot the board divides evenly,
five going with Nebraska's Big
Red and five choosing Alabama
and its Italian Stallion, Johnny
Musso. Unanimous picks are
Arizona State over Florida
State in the Fiesta bowl and
LSU's Bayou Tigers over Iowa
State in the El Paso's Sun bowl

Only Barney Cooke, victim
of two consecutive bad weeks
and perhaps wishing he still
had his UHall mouthpiece,
likes Stanford over Michigan in
the Rose Bowl and Virginia's
unpredictable SID also picks
Auburn over Oklahoma in the
Sugar, joined by only Dempsey
and Hugh Antrim, another
second-place hopeful.

Pennsylvanian Randy Wert,
who went down the tubes with
Penn State last week, again
chooses the Lions over Texas
in the Cotton Bowl. Right
there with him are five others
including leader Markon, who
can afford to make a few
reckless picks.

Only Doug Doughty and
Davis Marshall, who both made
news by firing their scouts after
poor seasons, like North
Carolina over Georgia and
Markon, who gave his tipster a
healthy raise, leads a pack of
four dissenters in picking
Arkansas over Tennessee.

In the other two Bowls,
top-dogs Markon and Dempsey
head a pack of four seers in
selecting Houston to knock
off powerful Colorado while
Carter is the only contender
among a similar foursome to
pick Ole Mill over hometown
Georgia Tech in Atlanta's
Peach Bowl.

Winner Markon was
unusually tight-lipped at the
drunken revel that followed his
win, adding for a final
comment only that a fund was
being raised by the other
prognosticators to enable him
to transfer to Chapel Hill.
