Soccer Choices

Ed Marks and Jay Conner
have led a host of Cavalier
soccer players to post-season
honors on the state and
conference levels.

Marks, a tri-captain and
center fullback, was the only
Cavalier to make the first
All-ACC team announced
yesterday. He also was on the
first all-state team announced
last week.

Connor was named the most
valuable player in the state last
week by vote of the coaches at
Virginia colleges, made the first
all-state team for the third
consecutive year, and was
named to the second
all-conference squad.

Four Cavaliers made the
second All-ACC team. In
addition to Connor, half-back
and tri-captain Jay Ziehl, goalie
Scott Peyton, and forward Phil
Crane made the squad.

Ziehl joined Marks and
Connor on the first all-state
team, while Crane made the
second team, and half-back
Sam Crosby made honorable
mention.

Carmichael Cup

The University is in sixth
place in the race for the
Carmichael Cup for excellence
in ACC athletics after the fall
season, it was announced last
week by the conference
commissioner's office.

North Carolina, on the basis
of football and cross-country
championships, has taken the
lead with 18½ points, 10 ahead
of the Cavaliers.

The Cavalier football team
earned the highest finish of any
fall squad as it picked up four
points as a result of its tie for
third place with Duke and
Wake Forest. Virginia booters
tied for sixth place with
Clemson (2½ points), and in
cross-country, a sixth place
netted two points.

Scoring in the competition
is based on seven points for a
first place finish, six for a
second, etc., down to one
point for a last-place team.

Scholars Team

Seven Cavalier football
players were named last week
to the ten-man ACC
All-Academic team, tying N.C.
State for top honors.

Co-captains Andy Selfridge
and Gary Helman were both
named to the squad for the
second time. Both were
members of the 1969 team. In
addition, Selfridge was one of
three All-ACC team members
included in the All-Academic
group.

Five offensive and two
defensive players made up the
group of Cavaliers.

In addition to Helman, end
Bill Davis, tackle Bob Burkley,
guard Tom Kennedy, and
kicker Billy Maxwell were
named to the offensive team.
On defense, safety Billy League
joined Selfridge.
