Cavaliers Travel To Maryland,
Third Place In ACC At Stake

BY RANDY WERT

After ten years of even split
in the Virginia-Maryland
gridiron rivalry, the Cavaliers
travel back to College Park for
the rubber match in a game of
unknown quantities.

Possibly the battle of
ponderously unsuccessful
football programs this year, the
game could prove to be an
exciting aerial battle between
no less than four quarterbacks
and their flock of fine
receivers. For the Cavaliers, it
is the last chance to ring some
sort of cheery note on the bell
of dismal grid fortunes as a 2-3
ACC record could do
something to atone for the
otherwise sad overall mark.

Both squads have identical
1-3 league and 2-8 total records
and both have struggles in
relative mediocrity in the past
few years. Maryland has won
two in a row in the series by
identical scores of 17-14. A big
win by the Wahoos could
benefit a renewed recruiting
drive in the heretofore
unharvestable Washington,
D.C. area, laden with fine
football talent usually reaped
by North Carolina and its
neighboring institutions.

Head Coach Don Lawrence
has announced that second
year enigma Harrison Davis will
be at the controls for the 'Hoos
Saturday on the basis of his
sizzling afternoon in a losing
cause against Carolina. Larry
Albert will be ready to go if
Davis should be injured or if
the offense stalls. The one-two
receiving punch of Bill Davis
and Dave Sullivan, although
arriving somewhat too late to
salvage the weak passing game,
will be very much in evidence in
Byrd Stadium, waiting for
deliveries comparable to those
offered by Harrison last
weekend. Bill Davis has
virtually clinched the ACC
receiving crown barring an
exceptionally big day by Terp
Dan Bungori against the
Cavalier secondary coupled
with complete shutout of
Davis.

No other major changes are
expected in the Cavalier lineup
with Gary Helman and Kent
Merritt expected to be
successful enough to keep the
huge Terrapin defense honest
against the rush. The Cavalier
secondary may have its hands
full.
