Tar Heels To Face Duke
In Quest For League Crown

By DOUG DOUGHTY

With the ACC race grinding into
its final week of games, UNC can be
proud of its perfect 5-0 mark but
the Tar Heels are still not assured of
their first unshared title ever.

Clemson's Tigers, possessors of a
lackluster 4-5 out-of-conference
mark, have carved out a 4-1 league
record and if Hootie Ingram's
surprise team can whip N.C. State
this weekend and Duke upsets
North Carolina then the race will be
deadlocked. In any other event,
UNC can claim the league crown.

Clemson followed a punishing
ground attack this weekend to wear
out Maryland, 20-14, at Clemson.
The Tigers carried out 66 running
plays against Maryland and picked
up a healthy 285 yards. Eddie
Siegler led off the scoring when he
booted a 48-yard field goal, the
longest in the ACC this year, to give
Clemson a 3-0 first-quarter margin.

In the second quarter Tommy
Kendrick directed two 67-yard TD
drives for the Tigers as Rick
Gilstrap tallied once on a five-yard
run and Kendrick nailed tight end
Karl Andreas for a 13-yard scoring
strike late in the quarter, making
the score 17-0. Siegler kicked a
32-yard field goal in the third
quarter but it was not until 4:03
was left in the final frame that
Maryland scored. Monty Hinkle
scampered 14 yards for the first
Terp touchdown which was shortly
followed by a 10-yard scoring pass
from reserve signal-caller Jeff
Shugars to fullback Tom Miller.

Winners only over lowly
Maryland, Wake Forest drubbed
Duke, 23-7, Saturday, and dropped
the Blue Devils to the middle of the
ACC race. Rich Searl, defensive
back-turned running back-turned
quarterback helped Duke to a 7-0
halftime lead when he left the
pocket for a 38-yard touchdown
gallop in the second period.

Rebounding, Wake scored 23
points in the third quarter as Ken
Garrett scored twice, on runs of 5
and 66 yards, and quarterback
Larry Russell also scored on a
16-yard rollout. A 47-yard Chuck
Ramsey field goal ending the
Deacon scoring and the game
concluded as a 23-0 shutout for
Wake Forest.

While the other six league teams
were fighting among themselves,
N.C. State played Penn State for the
"fun of it" this weekend. After
leading the stubborn Wolfpack by
only 7-3 after three quarters, the
Nittany Lions broke loose for four
touchdowns in the final period for
a 35-3 win.
