Booters, Wolfpack Play Scoreless Tie

Concluding the regular-season
portion of its slate, the Cavalier
soccer squad tied North Carolina
State, 0-0, Wednesday afternoon, at
Raleigh.

The booters finished this
year with a 7-4-1 record: a
sparkling 6-0 against state foes
but an unexpected 1-3-1 mark
versus league opponents. The
soccer team won the ACC
championship last year but its
only conference win of the
season came at the expense of
Maryland, 2-1, October 8.

Coach Jim Stephens
characterized the Wolfpack game
as "principally a defensive
battle" and the low number of
shots taken by either team
proved it. Over the regulation
time and two five-minute
overtime sessions only 23 shots
were attempted, with the
Cavaliers holding a 15-8
standpoint. The draw gave the
Wolfpack a 2-2-1 conference
finish, assuring them of at least a
share of third place in the
league.

Practices are still going on
for the hardy Cavaliers as
high-level preparations are under
way for the state championship
game next week. Originally
slated for this weekend, the
game has been postponed until
some time in the middle of next
week to allow Madison and
Lynchburg to play off for the
Western Division title in the
state.

The Madison-Lynchburg
playoff was necessitated when
Madison upset favored Roanoke
College, 3-2, in overtime
Wednesday afternoon. The two
opponents will meet Sunday for
the playoff and then one will
host the University for the
championship.

Finally moving toward a set
starting line-up, the University
has been using either 5-2-3 or
4-3-3 formation lately. Usually
the front line is composed of
wings Fred McGlynn and Phil
Crane and insides Steve Kennelly
and Jay Connor. The halfback
line includes Ted Knetzger, Dave
Payton and Andy DuPont.
DuPont moves to the forward
line when the Cavaliers use a
five-man front.

The outer line of defense
consists of Phil Marks, Chip
Williams and Ed Russell. Goalie
Scott Peyton, written into a
predominantly veteran line-up at
the start of the season, has
performed creditably and at
times spectacularly this season
and registered seven saves against
N.C. State.

Only one conference game
remains this season: UNC, with a
1-2-1 mark, meets Duke (3-1). If
Duke wins it shares the ACC
crown with Maryland (4-2).
