By virtue of a healthy 121 yards
gained on 26 carries against Virginia
Tech last Saturday, Kent Merritt is
in the position of eclipsing many of
the second-year rushing marks
established by such names out of
the past as Johny Papit, Frank
Quayle or Jim Bakhtiar.

Merritt's accomplishments
against the Hokies pushed his
seasonal rushing total to 697 yards
on 160 carries for a 4.4 average.
Two touchdown runs and a
touchdown pass he caught against
Clemson give Merritt the team
scoring lead with 18 points, a single
point in front of kicker Bill
Maxwell, who has a perfect
conversion record of eight out of
eight point-after-touchdowns in
addition to three field goals.

Larry Albert is second on the
team in rushing but, more
importantly, the 5-11 redshirt
third-yearman is passing at better
than a 50% clip, at last look a
higher figure than any of his rival
signal-callers throughout the league.
Albert has hit 51 of 101 passes for
571 yards and three touchdowns
while part-time starter and backup
Harrison Davis has completed a less
impressive 37 of 108 passes for 387
yards and one score.

Possibly the brightest spot on
the weekly statistical sheets are the
receiving figures of Cavalier Player
of the Week Bill Davis. Davis has
caught 36 passes for 377 yards,
which leads the ACC by some seven
or eight receptions.
