Ruggers Roll Over W&M,
Gain Top Eastern Ranking

By BILL NACHMAN

Weathermen aren't always right,
but the Virginia Rugby Club
withstood a premature cold wave to
cop three victories in four outings
Sunday at home.

Highlighting the frosty
afternoon was the 35-0 spanking of
William & Mary's first side by the
Virginia 'A' team. Coordination of
back and scrum play was
impressive, with each unit having
three members to score. Tom
Furniss led the assault as he made
one try, kicked a long penalty kick
(30 yards) from the touch line, and
hit two drop goals of 25 and 30
yards.

Wing forwards Byron Shankman
and Boyd Paige spent the day
camped in the W&M backfield.
Shankman broke for two tries,
while Paige added another.

Backs Morgan Cooper and Mark
Krebs had a try apiece, with
scrummer David Hudson
connecting on one conversion
attempt.

Prelude to the varsity tangle was
a narrow 15-13 win by the Virginia
third side over the Blue Ridge team,
the former Lynchburg College
Club.

The Ridgemen, however, had
not planned on meeting Mike
Colglazier. It was his three scores
(penalty kick, try and conversion)
which proved the difference.

Joe Seals tallied a try for the 'C'
side, while Peter Clark chipped in
with two conversions.

After braving the ice slicks of
Route 250, West Virginia Wesleyan
should have stayed back in
Buchanan, as they lost to the
Virginia 'B' (Turques), 36-0.

The fleet Turque backline ran
for eight tries. Joe Jennings
directed the display with three runs
for 12 points. Chuck Shelton and
little Randy Grespin ran for two
tries each, with Greg Thompson
contributing a solo effort.

Splitting the conversion
attempts were fullback Mark Storm
and prop Phil Mitchell. Each made
good on a two-pointer.

Virginia's fourth side suffered
the only setback of the day, falling
to West Virginia Wesleyan's second
team, 4-0. Though the Blue
(fourth) side penetrated the
Wesleyan defenses most of the
match, no points were registered.

Joe Cannon, at outside center,
sprung for a sure 60-yard try late in
the match for Virginia, but a
controversial call said that he had
hit the touchline while trying to
break around the Wesleyan wing.

Sunday the 'A' and 'C' sides will
meet Old Dominion's first two
squads at Nameless Field. George
Mason travels down from Fairfax
with half of Northern Virginia
Community College to meet the
second and fourth teams.

Recent rankings out of the East
Coast Rugby Union have the
Cavaliers in first place. Harvard,
Penn and Princeton follow.
