Ruggers Overrun
Spunky Colonials, 9-4

The Virginia Rugby Club "A"
side regained its top ranking among
East Coast college teams Sunday
when it topped George Washington
University with a superb team
effort, 9-4.

Peter Schmidt scored all nine
points for the Cavaliers with a try
which came off a long backfield
movement, a conversion, and a
penalty kick.

Wing forwards Byron Shankman
and Boyd Page were cited by a
rugby club member for their
outstanding defensive play, while
Tom Furniss aided Schmidt on
offense.

Randy Covington and Dave
Hudson led the Cavalier scrum
which dominated the set scrums
and stifled George Washington's
normally strong lineout play.

The win was marred by an
injury to the knee of Cavalier
scrummer Clay Rotherree who
will be out of action for several
weeks.

The win by the "A" side was
the only triumph of the day for the
Cavalier ruggers, as three other
teams were blanked.

North Carolina's "A" side
whitewashed the Turques 4-0 on a
sloppy field, while the "C" side was
shutout 20-0 by the George
Washington "B" side. Gary Ahrens,
Joe Leak, and John Valentine
played well in a losing cause in the
"C" game.

The fourth Cavalier side, the
Blues, lost to the "B" side of
George Mason, 7-0.

After three weeks on the road,
the ruggers return home Sunday to
face sides from William and Mary
and the Blue Ridge Rugby Club in
Openings Weekend action. Former
Cavalier players Courtney Hoopes,
Julian Rainey, and Dennis Revak
will play with the opposition.
