Turner, Ambrose Lead Way
As Cavayearlings Get 28-18 Win

The Cavayearlings surged to a
21-0 halftime lead over William
and Mary Friday and held on in
the face of a second half rally to
take a 28-18 victory over the
Papooses in Williamsburg.

Running back Dick Ambrose
and quarterback Chris Turner led
the Cavayearling attack as the
first-yearmen rolled up 170 yards
on the ground and 183 in the air.

Four different players scored
for Virginia as Turner, Ambrose,
back Jeff Stanley, and end Jim
Colleran each crossed the goal
line once. Steve Bowler, an
offensive guard, was four-for-four
in extra point kicks to round out
the Cavalier scoring.

The Cavayearling offense took
the opening kickoff and drove 80
yards in 12 plays for the first
score. Stanley burst up the middle
for seven yards and the score
which came just three minutes and
49 seconds after the start of play.

The Cavayearling defense
completely stifled the Papooses in
the first quarter, holding them to
only seven yards total offense in
the period, and 63 in the first half.

A pass from Turner to Colleran
gave the Cavayearlings their
second score of the day 10:08
gone in the first quarter. The nine
yard play capped a 12-play,
67-yard drive.

With only 1:17 left in the half
Virginia got its third score after a
90-yard drive which started when
Lou Painter pounced on a William
and Mary fumble on the Cavalier
10-yard line. The big play was a
55-yard pass from Turner to Bill
Lanahan which set up Turner's
second TD toss of the day, a
nine-yarder to Ambrose.

Williams and Mary dominated
the second half as they out gained
the Cavayearlings 211-55 and
outscored them 18-7.

A short Indian punt gave the
Cavayearlings the ball on the
William and Mary 27 in the third
quarter and set up the final
Virginia score of the day. Turner
drove the team to the score in just
six plays, covering the last seven
yards personally on a roll out.

The Cavayearlings are now 2-1
on the season, and return home
next Friday for a contest with the
Baby Tar Heels of North Carolina.
