VPI, VMI Defeat
Winless Runners

By DOUG DOUGHTY

The Cross Country squad
lowered its record to 0-4,
yesterday, when the team dropped
a tri-meet with VMI and VPI, held
at the Keydets' Kerr's Creek
Course, 5.2 miles through the
countryside surrounding the
Lexington campus.

The Keydets just edged the
Cavaliers, 25-31, but the Gobbler
triumph was by a more substantial
17-41 margin.

The best showing for the
University runners yesterday was
turned in by team mainstay Phil
Meyer. Meyer sprinted home in a
respectable 26:56 to place first in
the competition with VMI and
fourth against VPI. He was
followed by teammates Brew
Barron, who finished fourth against
the Keydets and seventh against
VPI, and Jim Wood, who placed
sixth and eighth, respectively.
Barron's time was 27:29 while
Wood clocked a 27:40.

Rounding out the Cavalier finish
were Gordon Littig and Donal Day,
who succeeded in scoring the first
points of their varsity careers. They
finished ninth and tenth,
respectively, in competition against
each of the state opponents.

University Cross Country Coach
Lou Onesty was understandably
upset with the loss, according to
University Hall sources. No other
apparent measurement for the
defeat could be made than that the
Cavaliers whitewashed VMI in cross
country competition last year.
