Soccer Team Defeats VMI,
Points To Conference Opener

Cavalier soccer notched a third
straight win this year with a 3-0
blanking of Virginia Military
Institute

Racking up their second
consecutive shutout, Virginia toyed
with the Keydets in a first half
which saw no scores, but obvious
Cavalier domination. After a
mid game breather, however, Coach
Jim Stephens' charges came roaring
out to score twice in the early
minutes of the second half.

Phil Crane, fourth year
wingman, scored once and assisted
once for Virginia, and it was his
pass to Steve Kennelly which put
the first score on the board soon
after halftime ended. With virtually
all the action in the VMI sector of
the field, it was not long before
Crane tallied on assist from Ted
Knetzger. Meanwhile, first year
goalie Scott Peyton was on his way
to his second shutout in a row, the
first coming last Friday against Old
Dominion.

No scores resulted in the
remainder of the third period
despite the almost total domination
by the Cavaliers. First year forward
John Gordon got the ball to third
year right inside Jeff Curme
midway through the final period of
play for the third score of the
afternoon. A clue to the character
of the game was the mammoth shot
advantage enjoyed by Virginia. VMI
managed only four shots during the
contest compared to 47 for the
Cavaliers.

Footing was a bit tricky on
Carr's Hill Field do to the recent
Monsoons-but the passing of the
Cavaliers was sharp compared to
the sloppy footwork exhibited by
the Keydets.

Crane's goal was his fifth in
three games, and the Cavaliers
stretched their streak to three on
the season. VMI amounted to a
tune-up for Sunday's big contest
with Clemson of the ACC, a game
which is crucial if Virginia has
intentions of repeating as ACC
champs.
