Booters To Battle
Old Dominion Sunday

By FLETCHER THOMPSON

The University soccer team
attempts to maintain its undefeated
record this afternoon, at 2 p.m., on
Carr's Hill Field against state rival
Old Dominion University.

Coach Jim Stephens rated ODU
as one of the three toughest state
opponents the Cavaliers will face,
along with William and Mary and
Roanoke. He added that the
Monarchs were similar to the
Maroons, a 5-1 loser to the
Cavaliers last Sunday.

Mr. Stephens predicted an easy
victory Sunday, although he noted
that the team had a hard time
getting up for perennially weak
state opponents. He cited last year's
loss to Randolph-Macon as an
example.

Several members of the team are
coming off strong performances
against Roanoke. Among these are
Co-Captain Jay Connor, wing Phil
Crane, who contributed two goals,
and goalie Scott Peyton, a
first-yearman, who managed five
saves.

The team's strongest point is an
experienced defensive unit, which
allowed only ten goals last season.
It is led by fullbacks Ed Marks.
Chip Williams and Ed Russell and
halfback Jay Ziehl.

Mr. Stephens plans to start the
same lineup Sunday as he did
against Roanoke. On the front line
with Co-Captain Connor are
returnees Crane Fred McGlynn,
who added a goal in the Roanoke
game, and Steve Kennelly, who also
scored against the Maroons. Joining
Ziehl, another Co-Captain, on the
halfback line are center-half Dave
Peyton and Sam Crosby.

In a recent poll. Virginia was
ranked tenth in the South.
