The Fifth Floor Fearless
Forecasters once again frolic
foolishly on the folds of the
sports page. With front runners
Randy Wert, Hugh Antrim, and
Ernest Dempsey returning to
complement letter winners
Tommy Bell, Bill Nachman,
and our "Establishment" man,
Sports Information Director
Barney Cooke, the competition
looks especially stiff this year.
Newcomers to the prognostic
panel include reputed wizard
John Markon, dark horse Hugh
Carter, and "Dangerous Doug"
Doughty. Let's look at what
this field of experts has to say
about this weekend's gridiron
scraps.

Three unanimous picks
highlight the contests this week
with the panel going entirely
for North Carolina over
Maryland, Georgia over
Clemson, and South Carolina
over North Carolina State.
UNC is 2-0 on the season the
stand as the only undefeated
team among the unanimous
choices. South Carolina,
Maryland and Georgia are 1-1
with the others winless.

Michigan's Wolverines, now
familiar as the 56-0 conquerors
of the Cavaliers, are 9-1
favorites to take winless but
close UCLA. Only Bill
Nachman, famous for his oddly
telepathic tendencies, sees the
Bruins on the verge of a
breakout after dropping games
to Pitt and Texas. Villanova
and Auburn, seldom
mentioned in the same football
breath (another first for CD
Sports?) are each 8-2 choices
over their opponents, Virginia
Military and Tennessee,
respectively. Rookies Markon
and Carter like the Big Orange
against Auburn's
Sullivan-to-Beasley combo,
while Marshall, dead last in last
year's Pigskin Picks and Carter
(we emphasize rookie) take the
Keydets over the Wildcats.

Mr. Cooke, Nachman, and
Carter were the only three to
see Miami as the favorites over
Wake's Triple Option, while
Mississippi State and Oklahoma
State are 6-4 picks as winners.
