Lawrence Cites "Talented
People, Size and Speed"

It had to be a disappointing
Saturday afternoon for the Cavalier
football team. Surely no one
expected them to win, but many
had hoped that the Wahoos could
at least keep from being humiliated
by fourth-ranked Michigan. No
such luck.

Too Powerful

The Wolverines really did
nothing unexpected, they just
overpowered the Cavaliers with "a
lot of talented people, size and
speed," according to Head Coach
Don Lawrence.

Michigan dominated every
statistical category except kickoff
returns, an area in which the
Cavaliers certainly gained much
experience. It need not have been
so bad. It could have been only
21-0 at the half except for a costly
pass interference penalty and an
uncovered kickoff in the closing
minute.

The Cavaliers escaped with no
major injuries, although defensive
linemen Billy Williams and Andy
Selfridge were hampered by ankle
sprains, and everyone who made
the trip gained plenty of experience
as both teams substituted heavily.

Worst Ever

It was the worst loss the
Cavaliers have suffered since 1936
against what must be one of the
most powerful teams they have ever
faced.

What good, other than the
tremendous monetary gain, did the
game do? "Well," said one athletic
department official who said he
would be surprised if Michigan did
not win the national title, "they
certainly won't be too scared of the
other teams on the schedule after
that experience."
