VPI Snatches Triangular,
Virginia Humbled In Field

By Doug Doughty

Virginia Tech took the lead
from the start and bested Virginia
and Washington and Lee, in a
triangular meet held yesterday, at
Lannigan Track. VPI posted 111
points, Virginia followed with 73
points and outclassed W&L
managed a lowly score of 8.

Virginia was soundly defeated in
the running events, winning only
three races and a relay, but it was
even more embarrassed in the field
where the Cavaliers were
whitewashed by the Gobblers. The
Generals could take no better than
a fourth in any event and often
their times were not even recorded.

Cavalier standouts for the meet
were Kent Merritt, Brew Barron
and Gerry Hart. First-yearman
Merritt broke away from the field
and notched a time of 9.7 seconds
in the 100-yard dash. It was his best
time of the year and only a tenth of
a second off the best conference
time of the campaign.

Barron, steady all season,
clocked a 1:57.1 in the half-mile to
pace the field. It was a very good
time but still it did not compare
with his 1:54.8 in the State Meet
last week, when the competition
was somewhat stiffer.

A relative newcomer to the
event, Gerry Hart topped the field

in the 3000-meter steeplechase.
Hart, most recently known for his
share of the school two-mile relay
mark, was unheard of in the race in
the State Meet, but turned in a
creditable 9:56.3 yesterday. The
only other winner for Virginia was
the quarter-mile relay group of Jim
Gamble, Ron Shorb, Harrison Davis
and Merritt. Its time was :42.3,
with a victory margin of .1 seconds.

Again due to the relative lack of
strength in competition. Virginia
took part in little of the record
shattering that was unique in last
week's meet. A sweep led by
Barron in the 880 yards was
noteworthy as was Jim Shannon's
24 foot, inch leap for second place
in the long jump. Shannon again
topped his ACC best in the event,
and, if you go by last week's
statistics. Merritt's exceptional
:21.6 in the 220-yard dash was also
a conference best.

The Hokies proved little that
they had not already proved in last
week's meet and the Southern
Conference Meet, held over the past
weekend.
