Netmen Blank Generals,
Burris Awed By Progress

Gordon Burris' tennis team
continued its spring charge,
chalking up its 10th victory, by
blanking rival Washington and Lee,
9-0 Tuesday.

Without losing a set in the six
singles and three doubles matches,
only four sets went as far as 6-4
while two were complete
whitewashes. "I just can't believe
that we are 10-3-1," said Coach
Burris after the win at the
Homestead in Hot Springs, Va.
Virginia's young team has surprised
many this year and is prepping for
tomorrow's 2 p.m. match with ACC
opponent Duke.

Podesta Romps

Number one player Jeff Podesta
easily handled Bill Gatlin in two
sets, 6-3, 6-3. Doug Waterman,
playing in the number two slot,
crushed Marshall Washburn, 6-1,
6-2 while third man Bob Kain
blitzed Kim Thompson 6-0, 6-1. In
the final singles match of the
afternoon, Herb Beskin held off Bo
Hobson's second set rally to win
6-0, 6-4.

Doubles Play

Doubles action saw the top
Wahoo pair of Podesta and Kain
whip Gatlin and Thompson 6-3,
6-4. Ratliff and Swift scored a
point against Washburn and Taylor
6-3 and 6-4 while the third Cavalier
doubles team of Frank Spratlin and
Rick Kaspers handled Driscoll and
Steve Swenson, 6-1, 6-4.

Yesterday's win was the fifth
shutout recorded by the netters as
they had previously turned the
trick against Richmond, VMI,
Pfeiffer, and William and Mary Penn
State managed only one point in
their match early in the season.
Virginia's looses have come to
North Carolina, Georgia, and
Clemson, all traditionally strong
court schools.

In the Atlantic Coast
Conference, the Cavaliers stand at
an even 2-2 mark, having defeated
Wake Forest and N.C. State thus
far. Tomorrow's match with Duke
on the Lady Astor Courts has
obvious importance in the teams
bid for a high ACC finish.

This Weekend

This weekend will be a busy one
for the Cavaliers as they must travel
to Virginia Tech Saturday before
playing host to George Washington
Sunday afternoon. Only four dual
matches remain on the Virginia
schedule.
