North Carolina In Lead For ACC Cup

North Carolina increased its lead
during the winter sports season in
the 10th annual Atlantic Coast
Conference competition for the
Carmichael Cup for excellence in all
athletics.

The Tar Heels, who held a slim
one-half point lead over Duke at
the close of the fall sports season,
now hold a five and one-half point
advantage over the Blue Devils, 52
points to 46½. Maryland, winner of
the Cup for the last four years and
seven of the last nine, trails in third
place with 39½ points.

The Cup, a memorial to the late
William Donald Carmichael, Jr., of
Chapel Hill and the University of
North Carolina, is awarded annually
to the school which leads in all
conference varsity athletics.
Thirteen sports are now included,
since fencing was added for the first
time this year. Each sport counts
equally, based on eight points for a
first place finish, seven for second,
etc. A team must be fielded in a
particular sport to obtain points.

N.C. State is a close fourth
behind Maryland with 39 points
while the University if fifth at 34½,
South Carolina sixth at 23,
Clemson seventh at 19½ and Wake
Forest eighth at 19.

North Carolina won the
regular-season basketball crown to
add eight points to its total and also
came out on top in the ACC's first
fencing tournament. It captured
third place in both swimming and
indoor track and fifth place in
wrestling. During the fall sports
season it had a second place finish
in cross country and tied for second
in both football and soccer. The
Tar Heels have won the Cup twice.

Duke picked up two second
place finishes during the winter
season in fencing and indoor track.
