Netmen Crush Keydets, 9-0
By Bill Nachman

Monday's warm weather proved
to be just what Coach Gordon
Burris' tennismen were looking for,
as they were in command of VMI
all afternoon in an easy 9-0 rout.
The weather seemed about s
hospitable as the Keydets' style of
play. VMI never was able to latch
onto a single set. Captain Jeff
Podesta sparked the netters at
number one spot with a convincing
6-1, 6-0 demolition of John
Ashman. Number two man Doug
Waterman was also victorious with
a 6-1, 6-0 win over Ron Lau.
Bob Kain, at number three,
downed Jack Neff, 6-1, 6-4.
First-year man Rick Swift topped
Dwight Rowland, 6-2, 6-1.
Rounding out a perfect singles slate
were wins by Jim Ratliff and Herb
("Nyerb") Beskin.
Handling the first doubles with
ease, Swift and Ratliff outlasted
Ashman and Lau, 6-3, 7-5. In the
number two doubles, it was Frank
Spratlin and Dick Kaspers turning
back the challenge of Neff and
Rowland, 6-3, 6-4. Completing the
Virginia skunking of the Keydets
were Waterman and Beskin, who
tucked away O'Connor and Shelley,
6-4, 6-2.
Coach Burris' netters resume
play tomorrow, when William and
Mary's Indians host an eager band
of Cavaliers. Luckily for the
Virginia squad W&M is not at full
strength, but, nonetheless, should
be up for the challenge from this
Big Five foe.
Friday finds the courtmen at
home against Clemson. The
Bulldogs are fresh off a 5-4 upset of
North Carolina, which is currently
fielding a top ranked team.
