IM Boxing Finals Tonight In Old Gym

Time-Honored Ritual Of Packing Memorial Gymnasium For Pugilistic Contests Will Be Renewed Tonight For 'Faithful'

Intramural Action Pits Independents, Fraternity Men In Final Round Of Fiercely Competitive Bouts Starting At 8 P.M.

The finals of the IM Boxing
Tournament get underway tonight
at 8 p.m., as the 16 survivors of
Tuesday's semi-final round battle it
out for the championships of the
eight weight classes.

Two defending champions were
upset in Tuesday's bouts as the
capacity crowd in Memorial Gym
saw a number of upsets. Pika's Phil
Barber moved into the finals of the
158-pound class with a win over
DKE's Mark Kramer, last year's
champ. Barber landed a strong right
late in the first round to send
Kramer to the mat and went on to
win a unanimous three-round
decision.

Two-time defending champ Paul
Braun of Chi Psi, also at 157 but up
a class from the last two years, also
lost, dropping a close split decision
to Andrew Previtali.

Phi Kap's Jamie Rawles is the
only defending champion left in
tonight's finals. Because there were
only three entries in the 139-pound
class. Rawles received byes until the
final round. He will fight Sigma
Phi's Charlie Wilder who won a
unanimous decision over Zete's
Richard Alford Tuesday.

TKO Wins

St. Anthony's Charlie Frazier
and Chi Phi's David Hollingsworth,
both of whom have won two bouts
on technical knock-outs, will meet
in the 167-pound finals. Frazier
eliminated Phi Gam's Phil Russell
Tuesday night, while Hollingsworth
beat DKE's Richard Berkeley.

In Tuesday's opening 129-pound
bouts, John Matthews of Theta
Delt topped Mark Smith, also of
Theta Delt, in a split decision, and
will meet Phi Gam's Jake
Kenworthy, a unanimous decision
winner over Fulton Patrick of
Sigma Nu.

Wade Massie of St. A and
independent Kevin Hurley will meet
in the final at 147. Massie topped
Phi Delt's Charles Tanksley
Tuesday, while Hurley won a
unanimous decision over Mike
Montgomery.

Zete's Dave Bowman and Phi
Psi's Tom Gilroy each won
unanimous decisions to reach the
finals at 178. Bowman outfought
SAE's Steve Bledsoe, while Gilroy
defeated independent Richard
Oftedal.

New Class

In the 198-pound class, a new
class in the tournament, Sigma Nu's
Lynn Housner scored a TKO over
St. A's Don Snow to move into the
finals against Chi Phi's Al McLean,
winner over Cleave Null.

Bob Lipman of Phi Delt scored
his second TKO of the tournament
in the Heavyweight class, stopping
SPE's Rick Sterba. Mike Scheer will
be Lipman's opponent after his win
over Pi Kap Glenn Russell.

Judges for tonight's finals will
be former Cavalier boxers Bobby
Englander and Buddy Shoaf (an
NCAA finalist in 1949), and
Thomas M. Carruthers, a former
member of the NCAA Boxing Rules
Committee and a member of the
Olympic Boxing Committee.

Busy Referee

Billy Williams, former Cavalier
head boxing coach and Southern
AAU Welterweight Champ, and the
IM boxing coach since 1957, will
again referee.

Other IM competition has been
concluding in recent weeks, as the
IM winter season draws to a close.
Sigma Nu topped Zete 51-38 in the
High Point basketball finals as
George Yeonas scored 15 and Bill
Oliver 11. Greg Tilton led Zete
scorers with 13. In the consolation
finals PiKa topped Sigma Pi 59-41.

AEPI Tops Bowlers

AEPi topped PEP in the bowling
finals, 1599-1484. Bob Levin was
high scorer with a 570 series. Theta
Chi won the consolation
tournament with Chi Phi second.

Jim Steiger of PEP topped John
Mayhew of Delta Sig in the finals of
the squash tournament, but Phi
Kap came through to take top
house honors.

Phi Delt took the swimming title
for the second year in a row with
Phi Gam finishing second and
Sigma Chi third.

The finals of the Dorm League
were held last night with Fitzhugh
taking on Kent. Biology takes on
Watson in the finals of the Girl's
League this afternoon.
