Charlie Davis Named Best In ACC

Star Wake Forest guard Charlie
Davis was named Wednesday as the
player of the year in the Atlantic
Coast Conference. The
sharpshooting Deacon from New
York City was chosen for the
annual Flucie Stewart Award by
the Atlantic Coast Sportswriters
Association.

In second place, but far in
arrears of Davis, was South Carolina
guard John Roche, Player of the
Year in 1969 and 1970. Davis
received 86 votes to Roche's 30 and
North Carolina forward Dennis
Wuycik's 4. No one else received
votes.

Both Davis and Roche were
all-conference selections
throughout their three year ACC
careers. Davis averaged 22.8 points
per game as a sophomore, 25.5 as a
junior, and 26.5 this season. He
connected on better than 49 per
cent of his shots and was among the
national leaders in foul shooting,
hitting 86.2 per cent of his free
throws.

Wake Forest Coach Jack
McCloskey said of the 6-3, 160
pound Davis, "His total
contribution to the team just can't
be estimated. He fits so well into
any game plan we have, and he
moves so well without the ball. His

leadership is tremendous and no
one is better in the clutch."

Wake Forest has had other
Players of the Year - Len Chappell,
Dickie Hemric, but it is most likely
that any future Deacon stars will be
rated on how well they measured
up to the now past image of "CD."
