Pegues, Michaels Advance

John Pegues and Kevin Michaels,
Virginia's two ACC wrestling
champions, qualified for the NCAA
National Finals last weekend as
each finished second in the District
3 Regional competition at William
and Mary.

Drops Decision

Pegues lost a 3-0 final decision
to Ike Spoon of East Carolina in
qualifying for the tournament, to
be held at Auburn University in
Alabama on March 25-27.

Michaels earned what is known
as a "true second", as he lost in the
semi-finals, but came back to top
the second place finisher to qualify
for one of the two berths from the
South.

E.C.U. Champ

Michaels lost to Tim Gerry, also
of East Carolina, but came back to
defeat Pat McCall of Maryland,
whom he beat last week in the ACC
Tournament.

Three other Cavaliers did well in
the tournament. John Pitas, ACC
runner-up at 126 pounds, finished
third, and beat Maryland's Pete
Papas who beat him in the
conference final.

134-pounder Lou Pavia finished
fourth, losing again to Maryland's
Tom Talbert in another rematch
from the ACC Tournament.

Newman Upset

Bill Farrell, Cavalier
heavyweight, came back from a
first round ACC loss to beat
conference champion Ed Newman
of Duke in the regionals before
bowing out in the semi-finals to the
eventual champ. A strained
shoulder kept Farrell from
wrestling in the consolation rounds.
