75 Prospects In Uniform As
Ruggers Travel To Maryland

By Bill Nachman
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

Approximately 75 ruggers
will take to the pitch this
weekend sporting the
traditional orange and blue
jerseys of the Virginia Rugby
Club. After three weeks of
practice the veterans and
newcomers all are eagerly
awaiting the beginning of the
spring campaign.

Virginia's 'A' (first) side
travels to College Park to battle
with the University of
Maryland. Everyone from last
fall's outfit is healthy except
hooker Will O'Keefe. Filling in for
him probably will be Steve Bolton.
Props look good with Ralph
Robertson and Clay Ratterie there
Mike Scheer and Gary Ahrens man
the second row of the serum. Locks
Jay Waldron and John Oliver seem
set. With Byron Shankman and
Dwight Van Horne the likely faces
at wing forward.

Getting the ball out to the
backline will be scrumhalf Tom
Furniss, but he is being pushed by
veterans Mike Frakes and Jim
Bledsoe. Mark Krebs has the edge at
fly, while "Madman" Courtney
Hoopes is set for another campaign
perched at the inside center slot.

Top wing prospects are Ron
Pulliam and Sam Robinson, former
sprinter for the track team. David
Levy and Mark Storm have a
running battle at fullback.

The second and fourth teams
will accompany the 'A' side to
College Park. On the 'home front'
the third and fifth units tangle with
Hampden-Sydney Saturday
afternoon at Nameless Field.
