First-Year Lads Suffer 6th Loss

Fred Gianny sank both ends of a
one-and-one situation with three
seconds left Saturday to give North
Carolina its second one point win
of the day, as the Tar Babies edged
the Cavayearlings 65-64.

Bob McCurdy scored 30 points
to bring the Cavaliers back from a
12-point deficit in the second half
to lead the Tar Babies through most
of the final minutes.

The Cavayearlings missed three
opportunities at the foul line in the
last 1:07, two by guard Keith
Suddith and one by Steve Boettner.

Darrell Elston's basket with :17
left cut a Cavayearling lead to
64-63, and five seconds later
Boettner missed on a one-and-one
opportunity. Carolina got the ball
and Gianny was fouled after
grabbing a rebound on a missed Tar
Baby shot.

McCurdy was the only Virginia
player to reach double figures, as he
hit on nine of 14 shots from the
floor and was 12 for 13 from the
line.

The Cavayearlings hit on 55 per
cent of their shots from the floor as
compared to Carolina's 36 per cent,
but were badly out rebounded by
43-25.

The loss dropped the
Cavayearlings' record to 9-6 with
only a return engagement with
undefeated Maryland remaining.
