Virginia 4th In State Track Meet
William & Mary's Indians
received clutch performances
up and down the line this
weekend and regained their
crown as state indoor track
champs. The Indian squad was
involved in its usual close
battle with Virginia Tech, but
also had points taken away by
Norfolk State and Virginia who
finished third and fourth
respectively in the fourteen
team field.
Most of the clutch performances
came in the running events in which
William & Mary captured every
event from the 600 on up. The
ringleader was Tribe captain Howell
Michael who amazingly won the
half-mile, mile, placed second in the
two-mile to teammate Steve
Snyder, and anchored the Indians
winning two-mile relay.
Cavalier Wrestlers Easily Topped N.C. State Saturday
Strength In Lower Weight Classes Proved Key To 23-9 Win
The field events were Tech's
speciality. The Hokies captured the
shot put with Barry Alexander
throwing 52′ 1½″ and the long
jump on Jerry Gaines 23′ 9¼″ leap.
Virginia's Jim Shannon was third in
the long jump at 23′ 2″.
William & Mary's Fred Trepke
took the high jump at 6′ 6″ and
Charles Strode the pole vault at 15′
2¾,″ both new meet records.
William Betts of Norfolk State
captured the triple jump at 47′ even
with the Cavaliers' Fred Gaines
second at 45′ 2″.
Betts also won both hurdles, the
60 highs in 7.5 and 60 lows in 7.0.
Cavalier harrier Harrison Davis had
a rough time in both, hitting a
hurdle in the highs after leading in
his semi-final heat, and false
starting twice in the heats of the
lows for disqualification.
Another strong point - scorer for
Virginia, Kent Merritt also had a
rough time, starting slow in his
qualifying heat of the 60. Merritt
failed to get in the final in which
Norfolk State blitzed the field
getting the first four places led by
Cordi Pugh at 6.2.
The second place finisher in the
60, Jerry Cuffee came back to win
the 440 in 50.1 in which Virginia's
Johnny Morris was tied for second
at 50.2. Dickie Morris scored third
in the 600 won by Tom Duckworth
of William and Mary in meet record
time of 1:11.2.
Half-milers Brew Barron and
Mike DeCamps look third and
fourth in the half-mile after running
legs on the two-mile relay team that
finished third. Phil Meyer and Jim
Wood paced the two-mile relay
squad both running fresh.
Michael's winning mile time was
4:18 and Snyder's two-mile was
9:14 with Virginia's Phil Meyer
fifth in 9:27. William & Mary's
Allan Sarrett came through in the
1000 upsetting Richmond's Larry
Chowning with Virginia's Greg
Lane fourth after taking a spill on
the first turn.
In the final event, the Cavalier
mile-relay quarter ran second to
Virginia State in 3:25. Johnny
Morris anchored a great come from
behind effort to overtake third
place William and Mary.
