Cavs In VMI Relays,
Milers In Baltimore

By Mike DeCamps

With weather conditions
outside looking very menacing,
the Virginia track squad moves
inside to the warmer indoor
surfaces with meets in three
different locations this
weekend. One small group
composed of outstanding
sprinter Kent Merritt and a
mile-relay team will compete in
the prestigious Knights of
Columbus Meet in Madison
Square Garden Friday night
and then return to Baltimore
Saturday night for the
All-Easterns.

The remainder of the squad
will travel to Lexington for the
annual VMI Relays, a meet which
over the years has blossomed into a
larger affair with schools
representing the Atlantic Coast
Conference, Southern Conference,
Southeastern Conference, and
major independents.

In New York and Baltimore
Friday and Saturday nights the mile
relay quartet will be composed of
Johnny and Dick Morris, Sam
Jessee, and Julian Solotorovsky.
Saturday night the team will be in
the fastest section including
Rutgers, Morgan State, and North
Carolina Central.

At Lexington Saturday night,
many of the thinclads will be
competing against such area powers
as Duke, North Carolina, Maryland,
Navy, William and Mary, and
Tennessee. The team will compete
in the distance, sprint, and two-mile
relays and also will put individuals
in the two-mile, broad jump and
pole vault.

This is the beginning of a rough
weekend schedule for the harriers
that will send them back to VMI
for the State Meet the third
weekend in February, to Chapel
Hill for the ACC Meet the last
weekend, and all qualifiers to the
Nationals at the University of
Maryland the second weekend in
March.
