Hoopsters Meet' Heels

Randy Wert
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

Hot off a six game string of
victories in areas all over the
south, Virginia's Cavaliers
travel to tobacco country to
take on North Carolina in the
20th ranked Tar Heels' pressure
cooker, Carmichael Auditorium.

UNC, also undefeated after
three contests, remembers well
the 95-93 decision that Virginia
took in the first round of the
Atlantic Coast Conference
tournament last year, and Cavalier
fans can be certain that
Chapel Hill will be out on
masse. Averaging a whopping
105 points a game so far this
season, North Carolina has met
and dispatched such court powerhouses
as William and Mary, East
Tennessee, and Creighton.

What unfortunate gentlemen
will be on the court at
for the tipoff against Wild Bill,
Superhooper, and The Gang? Without
a Charlie Scott to turn around
ballgames with the consistency of
the tides, the Tar Heels are depending
on teamwork to make up for
graduation losses, or loss. Many
players return for UNC including
6-5 Dennis Wuycik who averaged
14 points per contest last season
and has had a game high off 39 this
year against Crelghton. 6-10 Lee
Dedmon, inconsistent at times last
year, is back to hold down the
pivot position again. Big Bad Lee
averaged nearly 14 a game and led
the team in rebounding a year ago.

Wuycik and Dedmon's frontcourt
will be 6-5 junior Bill Chamberlain,
used sparingly last year due
to injuries, but a quick, sharpshooting
forward. The guard will be
junior returnee Steve Previs and
sophomore George Karl, a 22 point
per game man with the Freshman
before being injured. The Tar Heels
will combat the "Super Kids"
offense with a pressure type
defense, attempting to make use of
their speed. This strategy will require
a good bench to spell the
starters and UNC reputedly has
such strength. 6-1 senior guards
Dale Gipple and Rick Tuttle along
with junior swing man Kim Huband
help out outside while Dave Chadwich
(6-7, 200 pound senior), Don
Eggleston (6-9, 212 pound senior),
and sophomore Don Johnston,
(17.7 per game average for the
freshman) add extra muscle underneath.

The Cavaliers will be psyched to
after their cage fortunes in Chapel
Hill. Virginia teams have been winless
at UNC since Carmichael Auditorium
was built in 1965. The
thundering of Cavalier shots going
through the nets could bring Carmichael's
walls down.
