Williams Seeks ACC Waiver

Girls at the University may get a
chance to compete on an equal
basis with boys for positions on
varsity squads after Friday. The
reason is that the University is
entertaining a motion at the ACC
session in Greensboro, North
Carolina to do away with a current
restriction on female participants
on the varsity level.

Represented at the Friday
meeting by D. Alan Williams,
faculty chairman for the
negotiations, the University is
trying to go against the conference
constitution. A three-fourth vote of
all eight ACC schools will be
required to get the motion passed
as an amendment.

Steve Sebo, director of
intercollegiate athletics, feels that
the female student "should be given
a chance to make a team if she is
qualified. This would open up the
whole scope of sports both at the
University and throughout the
conference."

Thirteen sports would be
affected if the proposal passes at
Friday's session. Fall sports
represented by the ACC are
football, cross country, and soccer.
During the winter the conference
covers basketball, swimming,
indoor track, wrestling, and
fencing. With the warmer weather
of spring comes baseball, outdoor
track, lacrosse, golf, and tennis.

Though Mr. Sebo was not
venturing to say if the University
was currently eyeing one (or any)
female athlete, he definitely felt
that "they (girls) would not hinder
competition in any way. Can't you
just imagine the extra boost a girl
shooting 70 would have on a golf
team whose best player before the
arrival was a 71? It would be a big
lift to the squad, as well as giving a
very qualified (and talented) person
a chance to show what she can do."
