Wrestlers Overcome VCU, VMI
Virginia's wrestlers got their
season off to a good start in
Memorial Gym Saturday, as
they scored impressive wins
over VMI and VCU in a
triangular meet.
The Cavaliers had an easy
afternoon, as neither match was
close at any time after the start.
They won 26-5 over the Keydets
and 35-3 over VCU.
Many new faces were present
in the Cavalier lineup, as many of
last year's wrestlers are not on the
team for various reasons. Despite
the changes, however, the team
showed strength at every weight,
except at 167 pounds, where they
scored a loss and a draw.
Co-captain John Pegues led the
Cavalier wins, as he won an easy
11-3 win over VMI's John Paton,
and pinned VCU's Don Carew after
50 seconds of the first period.
Third year-man Jack Johndrow,
at 126 pounds, and first year-men
Jim Holland (118), Don Drew
(142), and Bob Fowler
(Heavyweight) won two matches
apiece, with none of them having
much difficulty in their first efforts
as starters.
Co-captain Ted Moore and
134-pounder John Pitas won in
their only matches, as did
Attention all high point IM
managers. There will be a
meeting Monday in Memorial
Gym at five o'clock in the
lecture room.
190-pounder Kevin Michaels.
Moore and Pitas were ACC
runners-up last season, and Michaels
was consolation champion.
The small crowd at Memorial
Gym saw little excitement, as the
Cavaliers dominated each of the
matches from the start.
