McCauley Named Top Player

North Carolina's Don McCauley,
who ran off with school,
conference and national rushing
records, also ran off with Player of
the Year honors in the Atlantic
Coast Conference for the second
successive year.

The Atlantic Coast Conference
Sports Writers Association named
the UNC halfback for the honor
Thursday by an overwhelming
margin.

He received 86 votes while Duke
quarterback Leo Hart was runnerup
with 13 votes.

McCauley became the second
player in ACC history to win the
honor twice. The other was Roman
Gabriel, now of the Los Angeles
Rams, who won the award in
1961-62 while quarterbacking for
N.C.State.

McCauley topped off his college
career by rushing for 279 yards
against Duke. This made him the
nation's all-time leading rusher with
1,720 yards and moved him ahead
of O.J.Simpson of Southern
California.

McCauley scored more points
(126) than any other college player
this year. He ran for five
touchdowns against Duke to lead
the country with 21.

McCauley averaged 156.4 yards
for each of the 11 games he played
this year despite the fact opponents
concentrated on stopping him.

He is the only man in NCAA
history who has carried the ball
more than 300 times (324) and
averaged more than five yards a
carry. He averaged 5.3 yards for
each attempt.
