In Fall Classic
Ruggers To Visit Baltimore
By Bill Nachman
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer
Saturday the Virginia
Rugby Club tackles the
Baltimore Club in what
promises to be a highlight of
the fall competition. Virginia
sends out its A and B squads to
invade the Maryland pitch for
the first time in over a year.
Curtains For Sure
Last time the two clubs met
it was curtains for sure until
Virginia tried twice within the
final three minutes. In that
contest current backfield
stalwarts Sam Robinson and
Courtney Hoopes each gave a little
extra ounce of guts to bring the
home standing Cavalier contingent a
two point deficit which was
immediately erased when Tom
Furniss, this season's fly half, split
the uprights with the game-tying
conversion.
Baltimore again fields a strong
fifteen men. Ken Taylor heads a
speedy backline from his fly
halfspot. Taylor also is a key cog in
Baltimore's attack as his teammates
look to his foot for conversion
attempts and an occasional
three-point penalty kick.
Virginia drives up to Maryland
with its squad intact. The matches,
originally scheduled for Sunday,
have been changed since seven
members of the Cavalier A unit will
be trying out for an All-Washington
(D.C.) squad.
On the home scene things are
also hectic for the ruggers as they
are in the midst of conducting what
hopefully will be a successful raffle.
Last Thursday night representatives
from the Club visited first-year and
upper-class dormitories to sell
tickets to eager contributors. The
reason that the response so far has
been good is twofold; first, the
monies go toward helping sponsor a
Club tour of Nassau next spring
break, and secondly that the prizes
are fantastic. "Goodies" include an
airplane ticket both ways to Nassau
(first prize), a case of Muirhead
Scotch (second) and a $25 gift
certificate at Ed Michtom's (third).
Let's support the ruggers!
